Peter Bolton’s pre-season tour diary: Highlight and low point from US trip

Wednesday 2 August.

Home at long last and, of course, it’s raining.

At 10am on Monday, it was time to checkout of the hotel. The bag drop was open so I spent the morning by the pool. There was more cloud today, but it was still very hot.

I set off on the bus to the airport and stopped off at the famous ‘Welcome to Vegas’ sign.

The bus got to the airport early for my overnight flight to New York JFK.

I couldn’t tell you if there was a meal on the flight because I spent the entire time sleeping.

Then, it was time to change terminal at JFK, but we had lots of time to kill.

The next flight — direct to Manchester — was another overnight flight (Tuesday into Wednesday).

This time I stayed awake until after the evening meal and drinks were served. Some of the lights were dimmed and I got another few hours pf ‘aeroplane sleep’.

We landed in Manchester at 7am and arrived home by 8am. I’m not tired (yet) but I am looking forward to sleeping well in my own bed tonight.

Overall, I had a brilliant 12 days meeting some great Reds (mainly from the USA — but others from UK, South Africa, Europe and South America.

Just one win (well two if you count the penalty shootout) and three defeats, so not the best of results, but I’m sure Erik ten Hag has learnt a lot and its minutes under the belts for most of the squad.

The highlight of my trip

The Reds I met and the time we had together. Thank you America.

The lowlight was hearing a United player get booed, just because some guy from a fan channel told them to. Shocking!

Now, a few days rest until the lunchtime kick-off at Old Trafford.
