Rule changes coming to the Premier League 2023/24

The Premier League is set to introducce number of new rules, including changes to the amount of stoppage time added at the end of games.

Sky Sports claim we will see lengthier incidents of stoppage time added to games, which will remind us all of the 2022 World Cup, where games often had more than 10 minutes of additional time.

Fans as well as the authorities are calling for a clamp down on time-wasting (including long celebrations and natural game pauses). Records from last season show the average length of time the ball was in play during Premier League games was just 55 minutes.

The report adds that referees are set to be stricter on managers staying in their technical areas, though they could be more lenient on tackles made by players in an attempt to let games run themselves.

There’s also the introduction of a rule that could see players booked if they are deemed to be crowding officials.

Furthermore, staff are now banned from approaching officials at half-time and at full-time while no more than two people are allowed to coach in the technical area at the same time. The second individual seen do this receives an automatic yellow card. That means all except one member of staff must be seated.

Staff members not named on the team sheet are not permitted to stand in the technical area.
