Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw admits that Man City’s treble triumph ‘hurt a lot’.

It was obviously difficult to watch City lift three major honours last season, but through cheating and sportswashing, it just doesn’t feel the same.

United had a positive campaign of their own on the pitch under Erik ten Hag. The Dutchman ended our six-year trophy drought with a Carabao Cup victory over Newcastle at Wembley.

On the other hand, City had their best season yet. Not only did they fight back to win the league over Arsenal, defeated United in the FA Cup final but they completed the treble with a Champions League win over Inter Milan.

Shaw has spoken about how disappointed he was by City’s success, but how it can be used to motivate United players for the season ahead.

“Yeah, 100 per cent,” Shaw said when asked by the PA news agency if City’s treble win will give United some extra motivation over the next year, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News. “I don’t think there should be any more motivation anyway with them winning that or not, but of course it hurt a lot. A lot.

“I think all of us as players we felt that, especially for me seeing them come to the England camp. It was really hard to take, to be honest.

“Like I said, there has to be no more motivation than we have anyway, but we can’t accept that. We can’t let that happen again and I think we know that.

“I think it’s our time now to start putting a stamp on things and not letting it always be so easy for them because, you know, in the past it’s looked like that.

“Us as players now we can’t accept that anymore.”
