Kobbie Mainoo injury could rule out Manchester United’s midfielder’s exit despite Premier League interest

Kobbie Mainoo’s recent injury setback could implement West Ham United’s pursuit of Scott McTominay, according to The Telegraph.

The Irons had held talks with Manchester United regarding McTominay’s availability this summer, after a season in which his game time was reduced significantly due to the midfield strength at Old Trafford.

This subsequently led David Moyes to test his former side’s resolve and try to ignite a deal for his fellow Scotsman, but he and the West Ham board were ultimately put off by United’s £45 million valuation of the 26-year-old. However, there were still lingering hopes of reaching an agreement later in the window.

McTominay set to stay at Old Trafford

Now though, it looks like McTominay will be staying put in M16, where he has spent all his career since joining the club’s academy aged five. This is due to Mainoo’s ankle injury that he sustained against Real Madrid; United confirmed this weekend that the young prospect would miss the beginning of the 2023/2024 campaign whilst he recovers from the issue.

With Fred and Donny van de Beek both expected to depart Manchester in the coming weeks, Ten Hag’s options would be left too slim if McTominay left too – all but ruling out a potential switch to the Hammers.
