Peter Bolton’s pre-season diary: Beating Arsenal at MetLife Stadium

Sat 22nd – Match Day 3

Another beautiful day forecasted. Hot and sunny throughout.

I set off early afternoon on the bus over to New Jersey.

It dropped us off right in the carpark where the Tailgating took place. That made for lots of drinks and BBQ food being consumed.

I went into the stadium about an hour before kickoff and it was already filling up, with massive queues at all the food and drink stations.

We had good seats in Tier 1 of the ‘bowl’ – and I’m glad we weren’t in the top tier (the cheap seats – but certainly not cheap!) as they were miles away from the action.

We saw Andre Onana in a United kit for the first time – warming up with all the other keepers – but not in the playing squad.

Two well taken goals followed in the first half (Bruno & Sancho) to seal another victory, which made it three wins out of three – and not a single goal conceded.

But – not sure why – after our victory,  the game went to penalties.

We converted all 5 and won the shootout as well (2 victories over Arsenal in one evening).

A near full house of over 82,000 was a record for a ‘soccer’ match here as well.

The only problem with so many attending – we just couldn’t get back to New York!   (Over 2 hours waiting,  then train, then metro – eventually getting back to Times Square very late!)

Free day tomorrow then a very early Monday flight from New York to California .
