Bruno Fernandes is the new captain of Manchester United, the club confirmed this afternoon.

It comes after days of speculation and reports that he would be, so it’s not too much of a surprise to supporters on social media.

As well as that, the Old Trafford faithful had already identified Fernandes as the most suitable successor to take the armband, especially considering he was vice-captain last season and led the team out far more frequently than Harry Maguire due to his lack of game time.

The England international confirmed last weekend that Erik ten Hag had informed him of his decision to choose a new captain of the squad, three years after Maguire was given the esteemed role by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Fernandes’ captaincy more than deserved

Fernandes, 28, is now the permanent leader of the team moving forward and it’s no surprise why; he is the most vocal player in the side and isn’t afraid to give his teammates, the opposition or the officials an earful when necessary.

He is consistently one of the highest performers and his availability is second to none. Since arriving in Manchester in 2020, the midfielder has contributed 64 goals and 54 assists in 185 games, and has been named Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year twice.
