Manchester United have chosen fan-favourite as next captain, confirmation expected soon

Bruno Fernandes Harry Maguire captain armband

Bruno Fernandes will be the next Manchester United captain, as confirmed by Manchester Evening News.

The 28-year-old was certainly the fan-favourite to be awarded the armband, following a season in which Harry Maguire’s lack of game time meant that Fernandes led the team out more frequently as vice-captain of the club.

At the weekend, Maguire penned an open message to supporters stating that Erik ten Hag had held conversations in which he told the defender of his plans to choose a new captain for the forthcoming season – three years after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had promoted him to the esteemed role.

His future at Old Trafford is now uncertain, with some reports suggesting that Maguire is open to fighting for his place in the starting 11, though other speculation suggests he may opt for a fresh start elsewhere.

Fernandes’ captaincy more than deserved

Fernandes being officially recognised as the team’s leader feels like a mark of the new era under Ten Hag, and no supporter could say it’s undeserved; the midfielder has been one of United’s most consistent and reliable performers since he arrived in 2020. As well as that, his availability is second to none.
