Donny van de Beek backs Andre Onana to succeed at Manchester United

Donny van de Beek has backed Andre Onana to succeed at Manchester United.

Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign goalkeeper Andre Onana from Inter Milan.

The Cameroonian arrived in the UK today before undergoing medical examinations at Carrington training complex.

Onana, 27, will become the first-choice goalkeeper at United following the departure of David de Gea.

United fans are waiting (impatiently) for the official announcement, as we’ve known for some time that Onana is Ten Hag’s primary target to replace De Gea after working with him at Ajax.

The Reds won their second pre-season game of the summer against Lyon in Edinburgh and Van de Beek, speaking to reporters in the mixed zone, discussed Onana’s imminent arrival.

“Yeah, he’s a great goalkeeper, I played with him for many years and he’s a great personality,” Van de Beek said, as per the Manchester Evening News. “He’s good with his feet, he’s good on his line and my expectations are high for him, he’s a great person as well.

“I still speak with him sometimes and he’s a top-class goalie.”

Van de Beek scored the only goal against Lyon on his return from a knee injury which ruled him out for the second half of last season.

He added: “For me, it was personally a big moment. It’s nice to score a goal as well, but when you experience such a big injury and when you’ve waited so long for this moment, to come back is a massive moment.

“Of course, I know it’s just a friendly game, but then you realise that you enjoy football so much. It was a big moment for me. I’m coming back, I’ve trained and I’m fit.”

The Netherlands international faces an uncertain future at Old Trafford because he is not any closer to the starting line-up this year.
