Erik ten Hag breaks silence on United’s keeper search amid Andre Onana links

Erik ten Hag admits it is important to have a top goalkeeper at the club amid reports Andre Onana is on the verge of joining Manchester United.

Manchester United are in the market for a new keeper and it is clear that they’re trying to sign Onana from Inter Milan.

Fans have every reason to be optimistic about United’s chances of landing Onana. Ten Hag knows him better than most and, after David de Gea’s exit, it’s only right that the manager gets whoever he desires.

Tom Heaton started United’s initial pre-season friendly against Leeds. He was replaced by academy youngster Matej Kovar after the break.

After the match, Ten Hag was quizzed about the potential deal for Onana.

“Of course, goalkeeper is a key position, but I am happy with the players we have now,” said Ten Hag, as per the Manchester Evening News.

When asked how confident he was of having new signings in place before traveling to the US for pre-season, he added: “Confident? You never know in transfers, but we’re working on it. But in the meantime, we have to work on our way of playing to put progression in place.

“This is the moment in the season when you have time to train with your team, so I’m looking forward to Saturday and all the internationals coming in, and then you can really add sense to the squad, the team, and the way of playing.”

The 27-year-old is United’s prime target for a new keeper, with Fabrizio Romano revealing that Thursday is the crucial day to make a deal happen.

There is optimism after negotiations on Wednesday, although Romano admits there was a tense moment at one stage.
