David de Gea’s final moment as a Manchester United player will tug at fans’ heartstrings

David de Gea confirmed last week that his 12-year stay at Manchester United would be coming to an end.

It didn’t overly come as a shock to supporters, as his contract expired on July 1 and the club have been heavily linked with goalkeepers to take the No.1 spot next season.

However, there was likely hope among some that he would still be around in some form, whether it be a cup ‘keeper or backup option.

The Spaniard was the last remaining Red to have played under Sir Alex Ferguson or won a Premier League title, which rounds off the end of a truly unforgettable era that fans will hold such fond memories of.

Whether or not the club will grant him a testimonial match or provide him with a fitting send-off for his service remains to be seen, but if not, at least he was serenaded by the Old Trafford faithful one last time before his exit.

De Gea’s final time at Old Trafford

In United’s final home game of the season, he did the usual lap of honour around the pitch with his now-wife and daughter.

When he departed down the tunnel at the Stretford End, he was met with his iconic chant sung by the adoring Reds.

“Everywhere you go, always take De Gea with you.”
