Harry Maguire set for showdown talks as Fabrizio Romano provides update

Harry Maguire could be one of several first-team players that Manchester United part ways with this summer as they look to bolster their transfer kitty in a highly significant window.

David de Gea is the most high-profile departure so far but Maguire could follow the Spaniard out the sliding doors at Carrington, with the Reds skipper falling down the pecking order under Erik ten Hag.

Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof and even Luke Shaw are all picked ahead of Maguire at the heart of United’s defence and with two years remaining on his contract, his time may be up.

In addition to featuring in the majority of United games since he joined from Leicester in 2019, he has been a mainstay for England in the last three major tournaments and that is also at risk of changing if he does not play regularly going forward.

Now, just days before United leave for their pre-season tour of the United States, journalist and transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on the situation, saying that Maguire could be set to hold showdown talks with the club and that a departure may be on the table.

“Another story we’re waiting for is Harry Maguire and his talks with Erik ten Hag, it will happen in the next days,” Romano told CaughtOffside.

“At the moment I’m not aware of negotiations with West Ham, they are still busy with the midfielders situation as they have to replace Declan Rice. It’s not something imminent, at the moment, but I still think there are chances for Maguire to leave Old Trafford this summer.”

Last month, it was reported that West Ham held an interest in signing Maguire but the centre-back’s high wages could be a sticking point in any deal.

It remains to be seen whether any club is willing to meet Maguire’s wage demands but as things stand, Maguire’s imminent talks with the manager may decide his future.
