Mason Greenwood decision expected before new season

Manchester United will begin pre-season preparations this morning and we appear to be getting closer to the club’s decision on Mason Greenwood.

Erik ten Hag would have been drawing out his plans for the coming weeks prior to now, but today the first group of players will return to Carrington training complex, including new signing Mason Mount.

One thing to note from the group that shows up this morning is that it won’t feature Mason Greenwood.

Greenwood, 21, was arrested in January 2022 following allegations of attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour.

The Crown Prosecution Service dropped those charges in February, but means he can walk free but without the public knowing if he is innocent of those crimes or not.

United are trying to get a better understanding of the situation by carrying out an international investigation into the case, however, it’s unlikely that they will find anything on Greenwood that the police couldn’t.

It’s important to note that, legally, Greenwood has no case to answer.

According to The Athletic, there is an impression that United are minded to keep Greenwood contracted at the club.

The report explains Ten Hag is open to having Greenwood in his squad “at some stage”. From a purely footballing point, he is aware that the player can score goals and United are currently struggling to find an alternative to Harry Kane in the target market – at the right price.

A loan move away has been touted, presumably an attempt from United to let the situation die down a bit because they know there will be a backlash from fans and media if Greenwood returns.
