Manchester United are reportedly preparing a £40 million bid for Atalanta’s Rasmus Hojlund.

According to The Sun, the Red Devils saw their initial £30m offer for Hojlund swiftly rejected and are now planning another approach to test Atalanta’s resolve.

The 20-year-old has been identified as the cheaper alternative to solve United’s striker woes, with targets Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen being deemed too expensive for this transfer window.

He received plaudits after he netted a sensational hat-trick on his Denmark debut, where he plays with United midfielder Christian Eriksen.

Hojlund’s first season with Atalanta

In the Serie A, his contributions maybe aren’t as prolific as fans would hope – nine goals in 32 appearances across his first season in Italy.

It is, however, important to note that Hojlund did not begin the campaign as a starter and was instead utilised as an off-the-bench attacker. When injury struck their main striker, Duvan Zapata, the Dane was deployed in the starting line-up more frequently and went on a four-game streak of scoring in every game.

United confirmed last week that Wout Weghorst would be returning to Burnley following the expiration of his loan spell and with Anthony Martial’s dismal fitness record, Erik ten Hag needs all the help he can get next term.
