Mount, Varane and Garnacho: Manchester United’s likely changes to shirt numbers in 2023/2024

Varane Mount

As the 2023/2024 campaign approaches, several changes will need to be in place before the opening fixture – one being shirt numbers.

Manchester United will currently be mulling over adjustments to numerous players’ jerseys.

For example, Alejandro Garnacho is rumoured to become the club’s new No.7, following in the footsteps of legends such as George Best, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo. It has been vacant since Ronaldo’s exit in January and according to Manchester Evening News, the young Argentinian could be donning the iconic digit next term. Talk about big boots to fill.

Raphael Varane is likely to take recent departee Phil Jones’ No.4. He wore both No.2 and No.5 for Real Madrid throughout his time in La Liga but wore the four shirt regularly for France – prior to his international retirement.

Mason Mount’s move to Old Trafford

This would subsequently suit United’s expected new arrival perfectly; Mason Mount then has the option to wear the same number he’s had at Chelsea for the past four years – No.19 (currently occupied by the aforementioned centre-back). His medical is scheduled for Monday, July 3 so assuming it’s successful, the club will announce his transfer over the coming week.
