Manchester United should have a list of alternative options for each of their primary targets this summer. With the Glazers still in power, Erik ten Hag would be naive to think he will get all of the players he wants this summer.
Reports suggest Manchester United have at least three alternative options for Mason Mount.
According to ESPN, United are considering other midfield targets because of fears that negotiations with Chelsea over Mount are stalling.
United have had three bids rejected for Mount since the end of the season, with the latest believed to be worth around £55 million.
Chelsea are trying to push the boat out for money money, despite the fact Mount wants to leave and has just 12 months left on his contract meaning he can walk for free next summer.
ESPN stress that United believe their valuation of Mount is fair and our latest offer remains on the table. That gives the impression that Chelsea could still accept it, should they come to their senses.
The report adds that United have alternative targets if Mount doesn’t join. They include Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo, Ajax’s Mohammed Kudus and Taylor Booth of FC Utrecht.
Since the takeover has been dragged out, Ten Hag is left with no other choice but to operate under a strict budget this summer. United need to sell players and we usually struggle to do that.
Ten Hag also needs to prioritise the search for a new centre-forward and goalkeeper. If United overspend on Mount, that means we’ve less money to sign players we desperately need.
Stretty News verdict
This could be a tactical briefing from United to warn Chelsea that they could step away and pursue other targets, but if this is the player Ten Hag wants, they will be hoping the suits down in Stamford Bridge change their stance.
What is the point in pricing a player out of a player when they’ve made up their mind about leaving the club?
Mauricio Pochettino won’t want an unhappy Mount in the dressing room next season. He will have other problems to deal with!
