Manchester United had a second bid rejected by Chelsea for Mason Mount this week. The Reds are preparing to up their offer and it’s thought the Blues want close to £65 million.

We fully expect United to go in with a third offer for Mount, even though The Mirror claim the Glazers won’t sanction any spending until the takeover is complete.

However, CBS journalist Ben Jacobs believes United remain optimistic on Mount because they are aware he wants the move.

Jacobs adds that United are hoping to sign Mount for under £60m, but Chelsea are still trying to push the boat out for a bigger fee.

Mount’s contract expires next year, yet Chelsea want £65m for his signature this summer. Previous reports stressed they wanted £70m but United have made it clear they won’t pay that amount.

While I believe Mount would be a brilliant signing for United, the club would be shooting themselves in the foot if they overspend knowing he will be available for free next year.

That would set a dangerous precedent for the rest of the summer transfer window.
