Retrial date set for Harry Maguire after Greece arrest in 2020

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has reportedly been given a February 7 retrial date, three years after his conviction for assault and attempted bribery in Greece where quashed.

Maguire has dealt with a lot of negativity publicity on the pitch in recent seasons, but he also had to deal with issues off the pitch.

The England international was arrested while on a family holiday in Mykonos in 2020.

He was then handed a suspended jail sentence of 20 months and 10 days after a court in Syros found him guilty of assaulting police, resisting arrest and attempted bribery.

When Maguire appealed the decision his conviction was quashed, which has led to a retrial at a higher court – scheduled for February 7, 2024 (via The Sun).

An initial retrial was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Maguire, who is not expected to attend the hearing in person, won’t be given a more severe punishment if found guilty again.

The defender faces an uncertain future at United after losing his place in the team. Erik ten Hag signed Lisandro Martinez last summer and there’s currently four players ahead of him in the pecking order — including left-back and fellow England star Luke Shaw.

England manager Gareth Southgate has sent a warning to Maguire over his playing time. He can’t continue to make the squad if he’s not playing regularly for his club.
