Former Chelsea star believes Marcus Rashford should not be granted huge pay increase yet

Former Chelsea star Tony Cascarino has voiced concerns over Manchester United’s tabled contract proposal to Marcus Rashford.

The 25-year-old is closing in on a lucrative new deal that will see him commit his long-term future to his boyhood club after the most prolific campaign of his career so far.

Reports suggest Rashford will be catapulted to the top of United’s highest-earner rankings with a new wage of £375,000-a-week. Currently, David de Gea earns this amount, but his contract will expire in 10 days and if he was to sign a new one, the club will aim to significantly reduce his pay packet.

Rashford is on the back of a 30-goal season for the Red Devils, making him the first player to do so since Robin van Persie 10 years ago, which is impressive considering he is often deployed on the wing.

The England forward, who also found the back of the net for his nation last night, had also been the subject of interest for French giants Paris Saint-Germain. This has likely led United to the increased wage offer in a bid to fend off approaches from the Ligue 1 club – or any others across Europe for that matter.

Cascarino on Rashford

Cascarino weighed in on the matter on Weekend Sports Breakfast, saying: “Look, he’s a very talented lad. He went through a number of injuries and had problems off the pitch but now he’s set the standard of what he’s capable of.

“If you go three or four years down the line and we’re talking about Marcus Rashford, do we expect him to get near the 200 club? At the moment, he’s got 128 goals and 76 Premier League goals.

Can he get to 150 Premier League goals in the next three or four years? I’m not sure he’s capable of it. I haven’t seen enough evidence. He hasn’t achieved 20 once in the Premier League.”
