Sheikh Jassim’s camp rebuts speculation that takeover is complete but remains eager to agree a deal

Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al-Thani’s camp has rebutted the speculation suggesting that a takeover had been agreed with the Glazer family.

Last night, social media was again rumour-filled with the premise that Sheikh Jassim had won the bidding war and would complete a full takeover of Manchester United.

This was due to a news outlet in Qatar suggesting an agreement had been reached with the American owners, however, this report was in fact based on a tweet from an unreliable and unknown Twitter account.

However, as expected, it was false. PA Media (via Yahoo) confirmed this afternoon that the Qatari banker is still waiting to hear the outcome of his fifth bid.

His camp also described the latest reports as “pure speculation”.

PA adds: “The Qataris are eager to get the deal done with the summer transfer window about to kick into gear.”

As well as that, the editor of Al Watan newspaper, which broke the news on Monday evening, added clarification to his original post.

He said via Twitter: “Contrary to certain media and social media reports overnight, Al Watan is not owned by Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani, and Al Watan’s media report yesterday speculating about possible movement in the Manchester United takeover process was based on international media reports, as stated in the article itself, and with such news widely circulating periodically in international media for many months.”

Sheikh Jassim submitted his latest proposal last week to try and sway the bidding process in his favour and away from Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s, who was believed to be the preferred option for the Glazers, as he has offered them the chance to retain their shares for a few years before buying them out entirely.
