Report: Kylian Mbappe linked with Manchester United amid contract and ownership uncertainty

Kylian Mbappe has been linked with a move to Manchester United if he leaves Paris Saint-Germain this summer.

Last May, the 24-year-old penned a three-year extension that tied him down to the Parc des Princes until 2025, though it was later confirmed that the third year would be optional and only valid if both parties agreed to trigger the clause.

Yesterday, it was reported that Mbappe has now told the club that he does not want to stay beyond next summer, meaning he could become a free agent at the end of the 2023/2024 campaign.

Given the fact he is one of the most high-profile stars in world football, the Parisians know they cannot risk him leaving for nothing. Consequently, they may be forced to sanction his exit this summer to get their money’s worth.

French outlet El Pais has reported that United could well be a possible destination for the prolific attacker. PSG’s owners have the “intention to sell the player” to the Reds, and it’s been in the works since February.

This is, however, seemingly dependent on whether or not Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al-Thani gets his hands on United, making it a Qatar-to-Qatar deal.

Stretty News’ verdict

Ultimately, it seems absolutely ludicrous.

Reports linking United with Qatari ownership were not even that strong in February, nor were there any rumours regarding Mbappe’s desire to leave. In fact, he’s pledged to stay with the Ligue 1 champions for the forthcoming season numerous times.

As well as that, Mbappe has always been linked with Real Madrid and it’s a common belief that, if he leaves, he’s most likely to join the 14-time European champions.

Also, if Nasser Al-Khelaifi really had no involvement in Sheikh Jassim’s definitely-not-state-backed bid, would there be an agreement in place months prior to the transfer window for one of football’s hottest prospects to move from one Qatar-owned club to another, without there being as much as a bid on the table?

Looks like United fans are in for a long summer.
