David de Gea ready to sign new contract but knows No.1 position is not guaranteed after Wembley display

David de Gea is ready to put pen to paper on a new contract offer with reduced terms.

The 32-year-old currently sits atop the list of highest earners at Manchester United, raking in a whopping £375,000 per week. The club hierarchy is keen on reducing this amount significantly.

According to Mail Sport, De Gea is “on the verge” of signing off on a new deal, which has been in the works for several months. However, he is aware that his future as the club’s No.1 is not guaranteed.

Despite winning the Premier League’s Golden Glove award for the second time in his career, his season as a whole has been substandard.

De Gea’s below-par season

Numerous errors have proven costly for United, who clinched a top-four finish with one game to go in the closing stages of the campaign.

His performance in Seville at the Europa League quarter-final was perhaps one of his worst of the term – poor distribution, not claiming crosses or dominating his penalty area led to a 3-0 defeat and United’s European journey coming to an end.

On Saturday, he took his usual place between the sticks for the FA Cup final, in which he conceded the fastest-ever final goal when Ilkay Gundogan found the back of the net in under 13 seconds.

Whilst the blame for the opener can’t be placed solely on the Spaniard, it can be for the winning goal. Another outside-the-box volley from Gundogan trickled past De Gea’s hands in the 51st minute to lead Manchester City to their seventh FA Cup.

Erik ten Hag must now seek an alternative ‘keeper to have at his disposal for the 2023/2024 season, as well as bolstering numerous other positions across the squad.
