Diogo Dalot’s contract extension may determine Wan-Bissaka’s future at Old Trafford – opinion

Diogo Dalot has penned a five-year contract extension with Manchester United, keeping him at Old Trafford until at least 2028.

The 24-year-old has been a Red since 2018 when he was signed by Jose Mourinho from FC Porto.

Dalot has gone on to make 107 appearances for United, scoring three goals in that time and assisting a further six.

He is one of four key players to put pen to paper on fresh contracts under Erik ten Hag, along with the likes of Luke Shaw, Alejandro Garnacho and youngster Kobbie Mainoo.

One thing fans may take from the Dalot announcement is that he may be Ten Hag’s first-choice right-back going forward, meaning Aaron Wan-Bissaka could be on his way out this summer.

It was reported in Ten Hag’s first transfer window that the Englishman had been listed on the transfer market as he was not a part of the manager’s plans, however, when no suitable bids arrived, a deal failed to materialise.

Wan-Bissaka’s resurgence

Wan-Bissaka made just one four-minute appearance prior to the World Cup last winter, showing just how much he’d fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford.

Dalot then sustained an injury during the tournament that kept him on the sidelines for an extended period and Ten Hag turned to the 25-year-old to finally regain his place in the starting line-up.

Since then, Wan-Bissaka has been almost faultless when on the pitch. His revitalised form has seen him regularly rotated with his fellow defender and he has even been deemed the best one-on-one tackler in the world by Leicester City star James Maddison.

However, reports have suggested that the United boss is on the hunt for a new right-back, with Jeremie Frimpong one name in the mix for a potential move to M16. If Ten Hag was looking to keep Wan-Bissaka among the squad, would he really have opted to extend Dalot’s time at the club?
