Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has resigned from his role as Ajax chief executive.
It was only a matter of time after Van der Sar’s announcement today that Manchester United fans on social media would start calling for his return to Old Trafford.
As I stressed in an earlier article that I don’t believe Van der Sar has done anything to warrant a role at Manchester United. It goes without saying that it’s a much bigger club than Ajax and he knows that.
I get the fact that some people are keen to have legends like Van der Sar working at the club, especially when they have a background in roles as chief executives.
Van der Sar also played a role in dealing with United last summer when we hired Erik ten Hag before signing Lisandro Martinez and Antony.
It remains to be seen what the next step will be for the retired goalkeeper, but with United possibly having new owners so who knows what the future will bring. Our paths could across again yet.
United fans have been reacting to the news on Twitter as seen below:

The door open for Edwin van der Sar to join his good friend Erik ten Hag at Manchester United after stepping down at Ajax. Edwin has always been happy at Ajax but said previously that he would be open to other projects elsewhere, connections with ETH and United… it makes sense! pic.twitter.com/n1yp5vuLZf
