Manchester United could offload midfielder to Newcastle to raise funds for Mount bid

Scott McTominay could leave Manchester United this summer.

According to The Athletic, Newcastle United are set to revive their interest in the Scotland international after failing to oversee a deal in past transfer windows.

The Red Devils are then likely to use the funds from the McTominay sale to help orchestrate the transfer of Mason Mount, as Erik ten Hag is reportedly keen on acquiring the Chelsea star in the coming months.

Mount is out of contract at the end of next season and is unwilling to extend his stay at Stamford Bridge, so the Chelsea board would much rather accept a bid they deem worthy and offload him now than see him leave as a free agent in 2024.

McTominay could depart United this summer

McTominay has been a reliable figure in the squad since he graduated from the academy but has seen his game time drastically reduced upon Ten Hag’s arrival. The signings of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen have meant the 26-year-old’s appearances have largely been as a substitute and he has consequently made just 10 starts in the Premier League this term.

Given the Magpies’ Champions League qualification and resurgence under Eddie Howe, McTominay would likely be open to a move to St. James’ Park.
