Erik ten Hag wants to reward United star with new deal on higher salary

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez is set for an improved deal at the club after an impressive debt season at Old Trafford.

Martinez, 25, joined United last year after securing a £55 million transfer from Ajax. He has made 45 appearances since then, but he was sadly ruled out for the remainder of the season with a metatarsal injury he sustained against Sevilla last month in the Europa League.

It would be an understatement to say United have missed Martinez at the back, but Raphael Varane’s injury to the starting line-up on Saturday will be seen as a boost for the final games this season.

However, United fans won’t see Martinez back in action until next season and he could be in line for a new contract, with a pay rise.

According to The Sun, Martinez is set to be rewarded with a £50,000 wage increase, though there are no immediate plans in place.

Martinez currently earns £120,000-a-week and his deal runs until 2027, so his next package could be worth £170k per week.

The report claims Erik ten Hag, who has now managed Martinez at Ajax and United, wants to recognise Martinez’s elevated status in the United squad with a salary that matches it.
