David de Gea wins Golden Glove award after keeping 16th clean sheet

David de Gea has won the Golden Glove award for most clean sheets in the Premier League this season.

The Spaniard, who has been subject to lots of criticism this season, kept his 16th clean sheet of the league season in Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Wolves on Saturday.

I wouldn’t say De Gea has had a good season for United – at least performance wise – and his weaknesses have cost us on a number of occasions. That said, his record in the Premier League for clean sheets bodes well, though I think a lot of those come down to the fact we good defensively when Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane are partnered at the back.

De Gea became the sixth goalkeeper to win the award more than once, having kept 18 clean sheets in 2017/18. He joins a list that includes Petr Cech, Joe Hart, Ederson, Pepe Reina and Alisson Becker.

However, there is still a chance for Alisson, Aaron Ramsdale or Nick Pope can finish on 16 clean sheets — with three games remaining this season — but nobody can get more than De Gea. They would all need to keep a clean sheet in all of their remaining matches and hope that De Gea concedes in all of his.

De Gea was presented with his Golden Glove trophy at Old Trafford by former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Congratulations to De Gea on his latest accolade.

  1. Read the plaque on the golden glove, that’s not the glove for this season, but for the record man utd clean sheets.
