Richard Keys doesn’t believe Manchester United are “any better” under Erik ten Hag than his predecessors of the last decade.
That’s quite a statement because if you asked most United fans, they would tell you they are happy with the progress we’ve made this season.
United are on course to finish in the top four and have an FA Cup final to look forward to on June 3. On top of that, Ten Hag’s side won the Carabao Cup against Newcastle in February.
We’ve had ups and downs over the last decade — mostly downs — under an array of different managers, including David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick. All of them failed to win the Premier League.
Ten Hag became United manager a year ago and is enjoying a solid first season in charge. Once we secure Champions League football everyone will be on the same page, but it sounds like TV presenter Richard Keys will take some convincing.
“I just don’t share the general hysteria about Manchester United right now,” Keys said. “I don’t think they’re any better than they’ve been since Fergie left.”
United finished sixth in the Premier League and recorded their fifth consecutive campaign without a trophy. Ten Hag has already put an end to that drought.
“I think they’ve been better at different times,” added Keys. “I think they were better under Mourinho; I think they were better under Van Gaal; I think they were arguably better under Solskjaer. So, I just don’t share the hysteria that Ten Hag has turned up and turned them into what they once were.”
