Anthony Martial has come under fire after his recent performances in the team as Erik ten Hag plans to sign a new striker in the summer. Footballer turned pundit Paul Merson believes it’s time for Manchester United to replace him.
It’s no secret that Manchester United have struggled in front of goal in the Premier League this season. After 33 games, we have a worrying goal difference of just +9, which is considerably less than our rivals.
United had problems with Cristiano Ronaldo during the first half of the season and, after his contract was terminated, Ten Hag signed Wout Weghorst on loan.
The Dutch striker has only scored two goals since then and Anthony Martial has struggled to stay fit as well as perform.
No wonder United are being linked with an array of strikers ahead of the transfer window.
However, Arsenal legend Paul Merson has suggested that Martial “shouldn’t be playing for Manchester United” after Thursday night’s 1-0 defeat against Brighton.
“Manchester United’s current front three is Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Antony, but I think there will be changes in the summer, one million per cent,” Merson wrote in his Sportskeeda column.
“They are 16 points behind Manchester City at the moment and the same team next season will not get anywhere close to the Premier League title.
“They need a Harry Kane up front. Anthony Martial – seriously? He shouldn’t be playing for Manchester United, sorry.”
Although Ten Hag has shown faith in Martial this season, he has not been available enough. The French forward has registered seven goals and three assists in 24 appearances.
We need a proper goalscorer to take us to the next level.
