Rio Ferdinand names preference to succeed Harry Maguire as Manchester United captain

Rio Ferdinand believes Bruno Fernandes has what it takes to become the next Manchester United captain.

Speaking on the latest episode of his FIVE podcast, Rio Ferdinand made it clear that he was in awe of Bruno Fernandes’ performance in the 1-0 win over Aston Villa on Sunday.

Erik ten Hag’s team continued their push for a top four finish by securing three points against an in-form Villa side.

Fernandes has worn the captain’s armband in the absence of Harry Maguire throughout the season – so that was the case again at the weekend.

This came after Maguire lost his place in the team following Lisandro Martinez’s arrival. In turn, there has been speculation over the England international’s future, which means Ten Hag may be looking for a new permanent captain.

Ferdinand feels Fernandes is ready to take on the responsibility full-time.

He said: “Unai Emery was producing miracles, and who steps up to stop them? Bruno.

“We deserved to win the game. Did you see Bruno’s numbers? Wow.

“The guy – it’s remarkable what he is doing. If he was at Arsenal he’d probably have a statue now at the Emirates with the numbers he has done!

“Does Bruno take the captaincy next year? 100 per cent… I think he does. Since Bruno signed, he has been the most impactful player we have had. He’s wearing the armband while Maguire doesn’t play. I think it is a natural progression for him to be captain next season.”
