Kasper Schmeichel is of the view that Manchester United should be looking to keep David de Gea.
There has been plenty of debate around the goalkeeper situation at Old Trafford this season. We know that Jack Butland won’t be staying and that Dean Henderson’s future is up in the air.
David de Gea also has his doubters who believe his weaknesses – such as distribution — are having a negative impact on the team. This has also led to calls on social media for Erik ten Hag to sign a replacement in the summer.
The Spaniard is out of contract at the end of the season, but negotiations are taking place over a new deal.
Nice goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel says De Gea has done well to adapt to a different style under Erik ten Hag. And in addition to that, the former Leicester City shot-stopper doesn’t think United should be seeking a replacement.
“Looking at this season he’s been asked to play a completely different way than he’s ever had to play,” Schmeichel told Sky Sports.
“From what I’m seeing, people notice the things that have gone wrong but there’s a lot of things that have gone right as well. I think he’s playing at a really high level with his feet.
“The actual goalkeeping side of it has never been a question because it’s outrageous how good he is.”
De Gea has kept 15 clean sheets in the Premier League this season, which is more than any other goalkeeper as he tops the Golden Glove charts.
“I think United are looking at it like what would it cost them to replace him. It would cost you north of £60m and you already have a guy who’s a top class goalkeeper and from the looks of it wants to stay so I think they’ll reach some kind of agreement with him.”
