Journalist spots surprising gesture from Aston Villa fans to Harry Maguire

Journalist Laurie Whitwell spotted a surprising gesture from the Aston Villa fans towards Harry Maguire at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The Red Devils saw out a 1-0 victory yesterday afternoon to strengthen their grip on a top-four finish, whilst also putting an end to Villa’s 10-game unbeaten streak.

After securing the crucial three points, United also extended a run of 26 consecutive home games unbeaten. Erik ten Hag is certainly making the Theatre of Dreams a fortress again, so the focus must now turn to the team’s away form.

In the closing stages of the clash, Whitwell highlighted a moment between the away supporters and club captain Maguire; he entered the pitch at the 86th-minute mark and was met with applause by the Villa fans, who then went on to chant his name.

It’s a bizarre one, but it may be down to the transfer links that circulated in January. The 30-year-old was rumoured to be nearing a move to the Midlands club before the speculation was quickly shut down.

Birmingham Mail’s report suggests that there still may be some lingering prospect of Maguire joining the European football-chasing side, though, and with his future in Manchester still unclear, the defender may opt to pursue a move elsewhere this summer.
