Erik ten Hag has been criticised for his in-game substitutions during Manchester United’s away clash with Tottenham Hotspur last night.
One of which was Jadon Sancho, who opened the scoring in just the seventh minute of play. United’s lead was later doubled by Marcus Rashford, who fired home his 29th goal of the season.
However, the tide turned in the second half when Spurs came out after the interval on the front foot. By the full-time whistle, they had salvaged a point thanks to Pedro Porro and Son Heung-min.
Ten Hag’s initial changes were Sancho off for Anthony Martial and Christian Eriksen off for Fred, with the two incomings failing to make any impact on the game whatsoever.
10 minutes later, he removed Aaron Wan-Bissaka for Tyrell Malacia and Antony for Wout Weghorst. Spurs’ equaliser was scored eight minutes after.
Ten Hag defends substitutions
When quizzed on his choice to substitute Sancho, the manager responded (via the Man Utd website): “He scored a great goal. I think he had to score another one. But yeah, we had quite a good performance, but we lose control and also in the pressing before half-time I already said about the defence organisation of [the] left side wasn’t great, the cooperation wasn’t great over that side and I hoped also to improve that.”
