Manchester United have already confirmed that Lisandro Martinez will miss the rest of the season through injury. It looks like the same will apply for his primary defensive partner Raphael Varane in what would be a huge blow for Erik ten Hag.

Raphael Varane went off at half-time in the first leg against Sevilla, and it sounds like he triggered a long-term issue.

According to The Mirror, subsequent scans suggest Varane faces six weeks on the sidelines. That takes him out of the equation for the remainder of the Premier League season.

In other words, unless United reach the FA Cup final against Man City, there’s a very slim chance that we’ll see Varane kick a ball again this term.

Nothing could be announced immediately because United’s medical team had to wait patiently for the swelling to subside before they could diagnose the full extent of the Frenchman’s injuries.

Varane retired from international football earlier this year to focus on United. With a bit of hope, next season, Ten Hag will have better back-up options available to rest the likes of Varane to allow the manager manage his game time more efficiently.

Furthermore, Ten Hag shouldn’t get the blame for playing Varane most weeks because he doesn’t have enough quality in the defensive department.

United will find out their fate in the FA Cup later today.
