David de Gea had one of his worst performances in a Manchester United shirt last night.
Before going any further, I do think De Gea is an incredible servant of the club and when he eventually leaves Old Trafford, he’ll be remembered as a club legend.
However, fans are at their wits end with him nowadays and it’s evident why; on Thursday evening, the Red Devils crashed out of the Europa League after an appalling quarter-final display against Sevilla saw them lose 3-0 (5-2 on aggregate).
De Gea was directly at fault for at least two, perhaps all three of those goals. Harry Maguire certainly played his part in the first, but it was the Spaniard’s bizarre choice of pass that led to Sevilla opening the scoring eight minutes into the game, which set the tone for the tie.
The second goal should’ve been saved and the cross should’ve been claimed, whilst the third… see for yourself.
Squawka released a statistic post-match confirming that “no Premier League player has made more errors leading to a goal than David de Gea since the start of last season (5).”
De Gea to stay at United
Meanwhile, the club are readying further contract proposals since the goalkeeper turned down their first offer several weeks ago. Ten Hag is set on the idea of keeping the 32-year-old between the sticks for the foreseeable future, but it’s, unfortunately, a premise that he may come to regret.
The manager defended De Gea post-match by reminding the media that he currently leads the Golden Glove race, but does that mean anything when his antics have just cost the club European progression? There’s a reason the Spanish national team have cut ties.
It really seems like the best time for all parties to move on, though seemingly it won’t be happening anytime soon.
