Dimitar Berbatov believes Manchester United should keep striker despite injury record

Anthony Martial should stay at Manchester United because he can produce his best football under the trust of Erik ten Hag, according to former striker Dimitar Berbatov.

The Bulgarian believes that Martial could be a real asset to Manchester United if he was to stay injury-free. On the basis of this season, he would be right because we’ve got some big results with the Frenchman in the team.

It’s just a shame he has missed so much football due to injuries.

With Marcus Rashford out injured, and Martial fit for now, there is question marks over whether he can remain match fit for the upcoming matches which all have significance at the business end of the season.

Ten Hag will still be keen to sign a new centre-forward in the summer because he knows he can’t trust Martial. That’s the reason we signed a stop-gap in Weghorst.

However, Berbatov says Ten Hag should keep Martial at the club because the player still has plenty to offer.

“I would like to see him stay. I played with Anthony at Monaco and I know that he has the ability to be better than he’s showing,” Berbatov told Betfred, as quoted by The Metro.

“The only thing he needs to do is stay injury free and he needs to know that the manager trusts him.

“He needs to know that he can make the odd mistake during the game without the possibility of being substituted or being left out the next game. He needs the full trust of a manager and then he can play to his maximum capability.

“I’m pleased with what I’ve seen of him since his return from injury and I’d like to see him stay at Manchester United.”

One way to look at it is we haven’t got enough striker options to select from – so, in turn, we should be signing two this summer that won’t happen unless the Glazers sell up before the end of the season.
