Fabrizio Romano claims Man United star will discuss future with Erik ten Hag this summer

Manchester United will need to fill out their squad this summer as there are question marks over a number of players going into the annual transfer market.

Harry Maguire is one of the players with increasingly uncertain futures at the club, having been displaced by Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane this season.

The United skipper has been used scarcely by manager Erik ten Hag and with two years remaining on his contract, he could be on his way out.

Ten Hag has made it abundantly clear that he prefers both Martinez and Varane over Maguire, with Luke Shaw even stepping in to play in the middle on some occasions.

Maguire has, however, enjoyed an upturn in form lately and he was recently the subject of praise from Ten Hag. Now, journalist and transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on the situation, claiming that Maguire will hold talks with the manager over his future at the end of this season.

“Ten Hag recently publicly praised Harry Maguire and that is because the Dutchman really appreciates the English defender, especially as a top professional,” Romano wrote for CaughtOffside.

“Maguire has never created any problems – this is why he was not on the market in January. For the summer though, a lot will depend on what the player wants.

“As for now, Maguire is fully focused on the final part of the season and wants to win more trophies with Man United. He will speak to Ten Hag to decide his future at the end of the season.”

SN’s verdict…
It’s fair to assume that if Maguire does end up staying at the club, he will have to get used to playing a bit-part role as Ten Hag has shown no signs of wanting to break up Martinez and Varane’s seemingly unbreakable partnership.

The pair have found a brilliant understanding at the heart of United’s defence and that has set the foundation for the rest of the team to flourish.

Maguire has done well recently and he could prove to be a good option to have in the squad but questions remain over his captaincy status.
