Scott McTominay has been praised for demonstrating an authority never seen before against Everton on Saturday, according to BBC Sport columnist Garth Crooks.
After getting amongst the goals for Scotland recently, scoring braces in wins over Cyprus and Spain, Erik ten Hag was questioned about playing McTominay in a forward position.
The midfielder showed why when his powerful strike beat Jordan Pickford in front of the Stretford End.
McTominay’s performance earned him a place in Crooks’ Premier League Team of the Week via BBC Sport.
Crooks wrote: “Two goals against Cyprus and another two against Spain in the recent European qualifying fixtures suggest McTominay is finally coming of age. His performance against an Everton side still finding its way under Sean Dyche was as good as I’ve seen from the Scotland international. McTominay is good at putting himself about. Anyone can do that but against the Toffees he demonstrated an authority I hadn’t seen before.
“He didn’t just stop the opposition from playing – a feature in his game he is rather good at – but he also made Manchester United play, which he normally leaves to the likes of Fernandes. It seemed as though McTominay was no longer prepared to play second fiddle to Fernandes, or anyone else, and took matters into his own hands – and about time.”
Premier League team of the week
Ramsdale; A-Arnold, Zouma, Ake; Nunes, McTominay, Grealish, Olise; Jesus, Haaland, Son.
It was McTominay’s first Premier League goal of the season and it came before Anthony Martial made it 2-0 as United consolidated their top four place.
The Scotland international fired United in front in the 36th minute after a stunning pass from Jadon Sancho.
Hopefully it won’t be his last of the season.
