Signing a midfielder – or two – will be high on Erik ten Hag’s list of demands this summer. It might not take priority over the new for an elite-level striker, but it should be a requirement nonetheless.
There’s nobody in the squad – other than Casemiro – that can play as a defensive midfielder, so it should go without saying that we need a back-up option. We also need a midfielder who can create from deep positions – as a back-up or competition for Christian Eriksen.
Neither Fred and Scott McTominay are more than squad players and I think we need more quality ahead of next season.
According to TyC Sports, Alexis Mac Allister is attracting interest from a number of top Premier League clubs. They include Manchester United, Man City, Liverpool and Chelsea.
Brighton will be expecting a flurry of interest in Mac Allister after his World Cup heroics in Qatar when Argentina went all the way.
The player’s father said last month that whilst Mac Allister is happy at Brighton, there could be an opportunity to join a bigger club at some point.
Mac Allister’s father said (via The Mirror): “It seems to me a very good thing that he has returned from the World Cup and has not despaired about leaving, enjoying success calmly and in peace, in a team that loves him very much.
“The reception he received has been the best. He is very well in the club. We all know that in July there will be possibilities to be able to leave. But prior to the World Cup, Alexis renewed his contract so that the club also has the opportunity of an important transfer, so that a lot can reach Brighton. It’s the idea.”
Mac Allister, 24, is valued at £37 million by Transfermarkt but Brighton will demand a lot more than that in the summer, should they decide to cash in on the midfielder.
It goes without saying that Mac Allister would be an upgrade on both McTominay and Fred. On top of that, he’d push Eriksen for a place in the team, creating an even more competitive environment in the dressing room.
