Erik ten Hag has admitted that Manchester United have become too reliant on Marcus Rashford’s goals.
The 25-year-old is United’s top goalscorer this season with 28 to his name in all competitions. It is the most prolific season of Rashford’s career so far, and there’s still time to add plenty more to his tally.
His contribution last night, a first-half strike against Brentford, was enough to secure all three points for the Reds and move them back into the top four. It also levelled a statistic previously set by Wayne Rooney – Rashford has now netted 10 winning goals, the most by any player in one league campaign since the former United striker in 2009/2010.
Whilst his scintillating form has been exceptional to watch, especially with his confidence evidently flourishing with every goal, fans have voiced concerns that the club don’t have other prolific forwards at their disposal, as the majority of goals have come solely from Rashford.
Obviously, Anthony Martial’s ongoing injury issues this term have been far from ideal, but should goals be coming from elsewhere on the pitch?
Ten Hag on United’s goalscoring threat
Ten Hag was quizzed on the topic following Wednesday’s win and said (via Football Daily): “Yeah, it’s the truth [we have become too reliant on Rashford], but also we know other players can score as well. Bruno [Fernandes] can score a goal, Antony dos Santos has already scored a couple of goals, Jadon Sancho can score a goal, Marcel Sabitzer can score a goal.
“So we have many more players across the squad who can score and did [have] score. What you want in a squad is that you have two players who can score more than 12, 15 goals a season.”
