Manchester United could keep Wout Weghorst beyond loan deal

Erik ten Hag has dropped a hint that he could decide to keep Wout Weghorst in the summer after his loan deal from Burnley expires.

The Dutch striker has been busy since moving to Old Trafford, starting 18 consecutive games, but he has scored just two goals in that time. For that reason I’d say Weghorst is not everyone’s cup of tea.

In terms of goals, Weghorst is not the most prolific but his overall game warrants the utmost appreciation from his coaches and team-mates. You could say he’s willing to do a lot of the hard work which is the reason why Ten Hag may opt to keep the Netherlands international.

Ten Hag has been impressed by the striker’s hunger and big-match temperament.

Speaking to reporters ahead of United’s trip to Newcastle, Ten Hag admitted he is now considering making Weghorst’s deal a permanent one.

“Of course [he could stay] and I think he is doing a lot of elements of football [I like] – doing them really well. And he’s doing a really good job for us,” Ten Hag said, as per the Manchester Evening News.

“Pressing: he is the leader of the process in pressing, starts the press, very good in backward pressing. He is taking up positions, his link-up play he’s doing really well. He is making good movements, making space for others, so he’s also good in set-plays, so he is really contributing to this team.

“I think after Christmas we play 25 games and we lost two and he played almost all of the games so he is really part of the success.”
