Manchester United have hit a snag for the first time this season, with Erik ten Hag’s men currently on a three-game winless run in the Premier League.
The latest of those winless games came on Sunday as the Reds fell by two goals at Newcastle – a game that was completely dominated by the hosts over the 90 minutes.
United managed just one shot on target throughout the entire game and that is an extension of the already poor run in front of goal, with the result against Newcastle equalling a run of three league games without a goal from 2020.
Speaking after the game, manager Ten Hag admitted that Newcastle were deserving of the three points, claiming they wanted to win more than his side.
Now, defender Diogo Dalot has echoed the thoughts of his manager, also admitting that Newcastle rightfully came out on top at St. James Park.
“Disappointment I think is the word, we wanted to come here and do what we planned,” Dalot told MUTV, via the Manchester Evening News.
“We tried to find spaces and we knew they wanted to press high, even after that, we tried to play, but we could have been more patient.
“Especially in the last third, we could have been a little bit more patient with the ball to find the spaces, to create more chances. We have to show desire, beat them in desire and beat them in every challenge we have.
“I think they wanted that a little bit more than us today and that can not happen. If we want to fight for more, want to compete for the Premier League, we have to be more consistent, come here and dominate the game.
“We knew they were going to be intense and press high, but we have to beat it and be more consistent.”
SN’s verdict…
The catastrophic result against Liverpool last month was a freak result but it was absolutely paramount that it was followed up by not just one but a series of impressive performances.
That has not happened and after putting themselves in a position where they had a comfortable gap to their top four rivals, United now find themselves in a position where they’re right in the thick of it.
With the schedule intensifying with each passing week, United cannot let the rot continue. First up, they have to get all three points against Brentford on Wednesday.
