Scott McTominay pledges to provide more goals and assists after memorable win over Spain

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay will be trying to re-establish himself as a regular starter at Old Trafford following his goalscoring spree in a Scotland shirt.

All of United’s midfielders involved in international duty this time around got on the scoresheet during the break, but McTominay managed an incredible four goals in two matches.

Scotland have had a dream start to life in Group A after wins over Cyprus and Spain. McTominay netted a brace in both matches and they were well received in Scotland as Hampden Park erupted last night when they beat former world champions Spain.

Speaking to Viaplay after the 2-0 win on Tuesday night, McTominay said (via The Mirror): “As a kid, I was an attacking midfielder – I like to get in the box. I’ve got to keep doing that, I know I can add more goals and assists to my game.

“Everyone was at it, diving around, making the game slow. It’s difficult, but sometimes that’s the way it’s got to be. When you’re winning you’ve got to do stuff like that. Look at this place – I’ve never seen anything like it, it’s incredible!

“The manager said this is our chance to create legacies as Scotland players and these are the nights in 20, 30 years that people remember. We can’t thank the fans enough.”

It goes without saying that McTominay’s performances were duly noted at Old Trafford, too. He could get a chance to play against Newcastle this weekend after Marcel Sabitzer’s injury and Casemiro is still suspended.

McTominay has managed just two goals in 32 appearances this season for United, so it would be a stretch to say his goalscoring stats on the international stage this year haven’t carried over to club form. The Premier League is a much higher standard than the Euro 2024 qualifiers, too.
