De Gea rejects contract proposal from United with Ten Hag keen for him to stay at Old Trafford

David de Gea has rejected an initial contract proposal from Manchester United that includes reduced wages.

The Spaniard is in the final year of his deal at Old Trafford and it has been reported for several months that in order for him to stay at the club, he would need to take a significant pay cut if he signs a new deal.

Currently, De Gea is United’s highest earner on a whopping £375,000 per week, so it’s clear why the club’s hierarchy are wanting to reduce this.

According to The Athletic, the 32-year-old is unsatisfied with the current offer on the table from United and has swiftly rejected the proposal, however, talks are expected to reach a “positive conclusion”.

Ten Hag confirms goalkeeper selection

The report suggests that Erik ten Hag is happy with De Gea staying between the sticks for the foreseeable future, despite speculation that he was on the hunt for a new No.1.

This also likely confirms what supporters already thought about Dean Henderson’s future; the Carrington graduate is spending the season on loan in the Midlands with Nottingham Forest and looks set to complete a permanent move away from United upon his return this summer.
