Man United looking to extend contracts of two first-team regulars

There are a number of Manchester United players with one season or less remaining on their current contracts, with some of them having a clause activated to extend their stay until 2024 at the end of last year.

Diogo Dalot, Fred, Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford were all extended by one year and although the same clause exists in David de Gea’s contract, it has not been exercised.

Rashford is enjoying a career-best campaign, scoring 27 goals so far this season and Erik ten Hag will be keen for the 25-year-old to commit his future to the club. De Gea’s contract is up at the end of this season and thus far, there are few indications that an extension is imminent.

Now, there has been an update on the situation. According to the Manchester Evening News, United are persisting with their attempts to convince the first-team regulars to tie themselves down to a new deal.

It’s claimed that despite an ongoing sale of the club, the club are pressing ahead of talks over new contracts and Rashford and De Gea are seen as the two cases that are being prioritised.

Talks to reach an agreement are said to be progressing but in normal circumstances, fresh terms may already have been agreed at this point.

SN’s verdict…
It all comes down to whether United are planning on replacing De Gea by signing a goalkeeper this summer. If so, it’s highly unlikely that he would extend his contract to sit on the bench.

Diogo Costa, the Porto goalkeeper, and David Raya, the Brentford star, have been named as possible targets for the Reds if they look to put an end to De Gea’s 12-year stay at the club.

Paris Saint-Germain hold a longstanding interest in Rashford and in terms of contract negotiations, his stunning form couldn’t have come at a better time for the player.

Rashford is absolutely central to everything United do on the pitch and Ten Hag will be desperate to keep him around. Regardless of whether he signs a new deal or not, a summer departure is almost certainly off the table.
