Manchester United’s growing list of players they nearly signed and then went on to regret is quite stunning and the latest addition to that is Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was keen on adding a long-term option to the midfield over his reign at the club but such a move never materialised, with players he inherited from the previous regime dominating his spell at the club.
Caicedo was famously close to joining the Reds in 2021 when the Ecuador international was still fairly unknown in Europe but in the end, the Old Trafford club decided not to pull the trigger on a transfer.
According to The Athletic, United’s extensive research on Caicedo even went as far as to reach out to former captain Antonio Valencia as part of a background and personality check.
Despite a stunning evaluation from Valencia, United passed on the opportunity and Caicedo ended up signing for Brighton that same year.
Since then, Caicedo has made a name for himself as one of Europe’s most exciting midfielders and was the subject of a £60m+ bid from Arsenal in the January transfer window.
Brighton passed on that deal and recently, the 21-year-old signed a new contract at the AMEX Stadium.
