Manchester United will be looking to add some fresh legs to their midfield in the foreseeable future, with a serious injury to Christian Eriksen, Marcel Sabitzer’s short-term arrangement and Fred’s contract length all restricting Erik ten Hag’s planning.
Ten Hag added Casemiro and Eriksen to the squad last year and the pair have been stunning additions to the squad but the Dutchman is reportedly keen on strengthening the middle third further.
Earlier on Tuesday, United were linked with a move for Brighton midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, with Old Trafford officials reportedly holding internal discussions about the Argentina international.
Now, it is being reported that United are keen on reviving their pursuit of Mac Allister’s club team-mate Moises Caicedo, who was close to joining Arsenal in the January transfer window.
That’s according to German reporter Florian Plettenberg, who says that Caicedo remains on United’s list despite recently signing a new four-and-a-half-year contract at Brighton.
As per the report, United are interested in Caicedo this summer as he is still likely to leave Roberto De Zerbi’s men but the Reds will face competition from two Premier League rivals.
It’s claimed that Chelsea and Liverpool are also keen on the Ecuador international. Liverpool are, however, prioritising a move for Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham.
SN’s verdict…
United’s main focus this summer will be to sign a proven goalscorer to ease the burden on Marcus Rashford, who leads the way with 25 goals so far this season.
United have lacked a long-term option at striker for several years and Ten Hag will be keen on solving that issue once and for all as Wout Weghorst is unlikely to be kept past this summer.
Caicedo would be a strong addition to the midfield but having recently signed a new contract, Brighton are in a great position to negotiate and are unlikely to let him go cheaply.
