Mason Greenwood could face TV interview if Manchester United take him back

Charges were dropped against Mason Greenwood last month, but we are none the wiser as to whether the forward has a future at Manchester United.

Reports suggest Turkish clubs have made loan enquiries to sign Mason Greenwood on a temporary deal, but we shouldn’t expect any decision on that until Manchester United complete their internal investigation into the matter.

The 21-year-old has not played for the Reds since he was arrested in January 2022. Nor has he trained with the club due to an ongoing suspension which will remain in place until United’s internal investigation is complete.

Greenwood had multiple charges made against him – now dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service – including attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and controlling and coercive behaviour.

The ongoing investigation being carried out by United has no deadline and The Athletic believes club representatives have had a meeting with Greenwood.

It is also suggested that, under the scenario he remains, Greenwood could be exposed to a television interview in which he is challenged on the events that led to his arrest. We shouldn’t expect that to be aired on MUTV.

Adam Crafton and Laurie Whitwell report: “The sources also added how, in the event that the club do decide to bring Greenwood back, United may seek to frame him as a young man who has made mistakes and is remorseful for his actions, while also believing they have responsibility to help rehabilitate a player who has been on the club’s books since the age of six.”

It is understood that the decision after the findings will be taken by Joel Glazer and chief executive Richard Arnold, however, some staff members feel that restoring the player to their setup may take a big hit to their reputation. The same will happen if the Qataris are successful in their quest to buy the club.

Moreover, Erik ten Hag’s view will be weighed up at the final discussions.
