Virgil van Dijk urges Liverpool fans to create big atmosphere against United on Sunday

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has called on the fans to rally behind the team when Manchester United go to Anfield on Sunday. The fact he feels the need to do this should tell us everything we need to know.

The Netherlands international has called for a ‘big atmosphere’, which is something that comes with this fixture whether it’s at Anfield or Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag’s side travel to Anfield in very good form, but the same cannot be said about Liverpool this season. Bad results have led to finger pointing and they run the risk of missing out on a place in the top four.

United have a chance to do the double over Liverpool this season, after securing a 2-1 victory when the two sides met in August, with Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford on target at Old Trafford.

Liverpool go into the game after beating Wolves 2-0 on Wednesday night.

Van Dijk has called on the fans to help them through the game against United following a ‘nervous’ atmosphere in midweek.

“I think we need a big atmosphere on Sunday,” he told club media, as per the Manchester Evening News. “I think today obviously it was quite nervous and hopefully on Sunday we can get everyone in their best – including us, because we obviously have to do the hard work on the pitch against an in-form Man United. So, we will recover now and we will be ready for Sunday of course.”
