Man United confident of reaching contract agreement with 23-year-old

Manchester United have a number of contract situations they need to tend to as several first-team regulars are about to enter the final year of their contracts.

Late last year, it was announced that Marcus Rashford, Diogo Dalot, Luke Shaw and Fred all had their contracts extended by one season as United exercised clauses in their deals.

All four players are now tied down to the club until the end of next season but Erik ten Hag will be keen to keep them for longer, with Rashford seen as a priority.

Dalot has enjoyed a terrific season so far and has even ousted Bayern Munich defender Joao Cancelo as Portugal’s first-choice right-back.

Prior to the World Cup break, Dalot had started all but one of United’s competitive games but a bout with injuries since domestic football resumed has seen Aaron Wan-Bissaka, his closest rival to the position, start more often.

Now, there are encouraging reports on Dalot’s future. According to Football Insider, United are now confident of tying Dalot down to a new contract. As per the report, talks with Dalot’s representatives are going well and a breakthrough in negotiations is believed to be close.

It’s claimed that Real Madrid are interested in signing Dalot, with the 14-time Champions League winners looking for a long-term replacement for stalwart Dani Carvajal.

SN’s verdict…
United were on the hunt for a right-back over the summer but that does not mean that Ten Hag wanted to replace Dalot. If anything, his trust in Aaron Wan-Bissaka shows that he was simply looking for competition.

Wan-Bissaka’s resurgence has been impressive but it’s too early to say that he has jumped ahead of Dalot in the pecking order – that would be unfair.

It cannot be forgotten that Dalot was one of United’s best players in the first half of the season and if he continues to stay fit, he will want to finish the campaign in similar style.
