Micah Richards names Manchester United player who could cost them the title this season

Sky Sports pundit Micah Richards is sceptical of one Manchester United player’s quality in comparison to the rest of the squad.

Richards singled out Wout Weghorst for his lack of threat up front compared to the likes of United’s rivals Manchester City and Arsenal.

Weghorst joined the Reds on loan from Burnley in January after forcing his parent club to terminate a season-long loan spell with Besiktas and oversee his move to Old Trafford. He has since started eight matches, registering just one goal and one assist in that time.

Erik ten Hag has been forced to utilise the Netherlands international in consecutive games due to the absence of his first-choice No. 9 Anthony Martial, who has sustained yet another injury and is ruled out of action.

The Frenchman’s ongoing fitness concerns have led to reports suggesting that this could be his final season as a Red, and unless Weghorst is able to start netting frequently for the club, it’s unlikely Ten Hag will want to make his loan spell permanent in the summer.

Richards on Weghorst

Speaking on Sky Sports (via Express), Richards said: “The only problem I see with Manchester United is the No.9 position. Wout Weghorst is a good player, he links well, but can he score enough goals to keep them in the [title] race?

Arsenal have got Gabriel Jesus to come back, Man City have [Erling] Haaland and a World Cup winner in Julian Alvarez on the bench.”
